Various Types of Food Packaging Materials

Are you in need of packaging materials for food? If so, you need to ensure that you choose the right material to protect the goods to be shipped. Often the type of packaging will allow the recipient to identify the contents at just a glance. The type of materials to be used when shipping food may also be dictated by the shipping carrier. Here are common types of packaging materials or shipping supplies you may encounter.

Brick cartons-This type of material is air-tight, strong and light. The basic composition of this is several layers of plastic and aluminum. It is ideal for transporting needs as it protects food stuffs from damage. One major drawback of using this type of material is it is difficult to recycle. Drinks are often packaged in brick cartons.

Cardboard-A popular choice for many shipping needs, this material may be used in many ways. Often you will find cardboard boxes, but it can be used in many other configurations. If an item is packaged in cardboard, it can be shipped in the original packaging without need for anything else. It may also be used or recycled for other purposes.

Glass-The preferred choice for packaging liquids and great for many other food items also, it may be difficult to transport due to its weight and shape. This will depend on what is packaged inside. Glass is strong and inalterable and yet it is easy to recycle.

Metal may be used to package canned food and drinks. It is not appropriate for most other items. Canned goods are packaged in tin plate which is a heavy steel covered with tin so it will not rust. This is one item that should always be recycled. Aluminum is lightweight, yet strong, but is not the preferred choice as a great deal of energy and raw materials are needed to make it. Used aluminum should always be recycled and this product may be found in aluminum foil, soft drink and beer cans and many lids.

Consider all of the above when you need to purchase materials appropriate for packaging food. Each has its advantages and disadvantages that must be weighed. Take into consideration shipping costs also as you don't want them to negate any profits you may make from the food.
